As Director, Leadership Development, Katie supports Fellows in writing and submitting excellent charter school applications with her extensive knowledge of the charter authorization process. Katie joins BES from the New Mexico Public Education Department, where she served as the Assistant Secretary of Education, Options for Parents and Families. In that role, Katie led the statewide authorizer office in increasing the rigor and quality of its authorizing practices and was responsible for earning the state a $22.5M Expanding Opportunities Through Quality Charter Schools Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Previously she served as the Director of Accountability at the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools. Katie began her charter school authorization work through a fellowship with the National Association of Charter School Authorizers. Prior to entering the charter school authorization world, Katie taught eighth grade math in the Mississippi Delta with Teach For America. Prior to that that, Katie was a corporate litigator with Irell and Manella LLP in Los Angeles. Katie received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Juris Doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
